FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 2, 2001The Robert Berman Gallery is pleased to present new mixed media works by artist Elizabeth Tinglof. As a native Angelena, Tinglof graduated from Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design. This will be her third solo exhibition at the Robert Berman Gallery.
Building on her previous work, this new body of paintings consists of abstract compositions reminiscent of aerial topography. While there is a highly decorative, distant feel to the artists macroscopic view, the imagery is also deeply personal. Tinglof builds up and then strips away the oil and wax to create a surface that is richly layered and tactile. By further incorporating photographs that are both telescopic and intimate, Tinglof brings the removed, abstract quality of the imagery back into a more spiritual realm.
The artist plays upon both the opposition and the connectedness of emotion and intellect. She states that in these works "investigating the outward appearance becomes a metaphorical tool for exploring the external and internal places we inhabit." The results are paintings that can be construed as beautifully decorative but beyond that, in their full complexity, the works uncover the inherent relationship between the topography of our planet with the landscape of human emotion.
Please join us at a reception for the artist on Saturday, December 1, 2001 from 6 until 8pm. The exhibition will continue through December 31, 2001. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am to 6:00pm.
